A “truly spectacular” Hamilton home has been named the winner of the Waikato Supreme House of the Year in the $1m to $1.5m category at the Master Builders House of the Year regional winners awards.
The Karl Kampenhout Builder property in Pukete also scooped a Gold Award after the judges praised the way the home maximised the tight site to make the most of the views over the Waikato River.
Judges described the property as “truly spectacular”.
“Despite being built on a very tight and challenging site, this home does a fantastic job of maximising the location and views over the Waikato River, and the hills beyond,” the judges said.

“The owner wanted a modern home, one that acknowledged the peace and quiet of the site and the lone kauri tree. This home features outstanding detail and complex design that required a high level of care and attention to detail.”
Other winners at the awards included Iconic Construction in the Waikato Supreme House of the Year Under $1 million, New Home $500,000 – $750,000 Category, and a Gold Award, for a home in River Terraces, Ngaruawahia.
The judges said the house had been designed to create a calm environment that utilised the natural light.
“The clever, full height, sliding doors to the office are a real stand out feature,” the judges said.
“There is a lovely consistency throughout the home, particularly all the door hardware and bathroom fittings, which match in brass. All trades have done an exceptional job with excellent finishing, care, and attention to detail.”
Brown Construction scooped the Winner of the New Home, $1.5m – $2m category, plus the APL Sustainable and Environmental Excellence Award for a home in Matangi, described by the judges as a “home built for all seasons”.
“It has been built to European Passive house standards under the Ehaus Euro requirements,” judges said.
“Certification must pass a series of tests to meet high thermal performance and air quality standards. With high levels of finish and workmanship, this home epitomises the very best of modern living and comfort.”
The award for the Resene New Home $2m – $4m category went to GD Pringle Building for a Tamahere property that also scooped the Schneider Electric Smart Home Award, Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award, Kitchen Excellence Award, and a Gold Award.
“The home has been broken down into a series of connected pavilions with multiple living areas,” the judges said.
“High plinths enable the home to sit proudly on its flat site. Playful use of varying deck and landscape levels follow the build’s rectilinear theme. The whole house feels peaceful, light and calm – even though it has varying decors to suit family members choices.”
The property’s “opulent free-standing bath” also helped it scoop the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence award, with judges “immediately drawn to the large oak panelling sliding door”.
It also secured the Kitchen Excellence Award for a room judges said was “built with a large family in mind”.
“The high ceilings and upper windows add to this feeling of spaciousness. Equal consideration is given to design elements. This includes good strip lighting, not to mention elegant use of black and light-coloured timber.”
