McGuireWoods partner George Keith Martin has been named to The National Law Journal’s list of Real Estate/Construction Law Trailblazers. The award is presented to legal professionals who have made significant marks on the practice, policy and technological advancements in the sector.
Martin, former managing partner of the firm’s Richmond, Virginia, office, and his fellow honorees are profiled in the September/October issue of The National Law Journal.
“We are delighted that George has been recognized for his remarkable achievements,” said Dennis Mensi, chair of McGuireWoods’ Real Estate & Land Use Department. “He is an outstanding representative of McGuireWoods, and his character and experience are assets to our firm and our clients.”
Throughout his 40-plus-year career, Martin has been an innovator of public-private partnerships (P3s), advising public and private entities on construction, commercial real estate and local government law matters. Martin coined the phrase “synthetic TIF” to describe the financing tool used to fund P3s using a variation of tax increment financing. He also pioneered off-balance-sheet P3s for housing at higher education institutions.
Martin is a member of the firm’s education law team and handles education-related real estate and construction matters. He has received numerous national, state and local honors for contributions to the law and public service. He is a champion of safe and affordable public housing and sits on the board of the Housing and Development Law Institute in Washington, D.C.
“It is an honor to be considered a trailblazer for work that benefits our clients and our communities,” said Martin. “Supporting my clients as they grow and thrive has been very rewarding both personally and professionally. I also am especially grateful to my McGuireWoods colleagues for their friendship and support.”
