A new Netflix documentary is revisiting former McAfee antivirus software founder John McAfee’s time on the run from Belize authorities after he was sought for questioning in the murder of his neighbor Gregory V. Faull, an Orlando builder and then-owner of Tailgaters Smokehouse on the University of Central Florida campus.
Faull’s family sued the eccentric software guru John McAfee for Faull’s wrongful death in Orlando in November 2013, a year following Faull’s alleged murder. U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell, who had previously closed the case until a court of appeal ruling forced the case to be reopened, eventually ruled in November 2018 that McAfee was liable for Faull’s death.
McAfee, who died in Spain in 2021 awaiting extradition back to the U.S. on charges of tax evasion, was known for the antivirus software bearing his name but made international headlines in 2012 when he went on the run after Faull was killed.
A housekeeper found Faull — who was a fixture at UCF sporting events — face up in a pool of blood Nov. 11, 2012, at his home on Ambergris Caye, Belize police said. He was shot in the back of the head.
McAfee, who denied involvement in Faull’s killing, evaded police in Belize for nearly a month before surfacing in Guatemala. He then returned to the United States in December 2012, saying he feared Belize authorities would kill him.
Faull’s estate filed suit in Orlando federal court against McAfee and two Belize women in November 2013, claiming that McAfee, “either directly or through his behest or by his agents,” caused Faull’s death.
McAfee told the Orlando Sentinel at the time the lawsuit was filed he could not comment because he had not been served.
Faull bought his house in Belize several years prior, and after it was damaged in a hurricane, he worked part-time to rebuild it.
McAfee said he “barely” knew Faull but local Belize media reported the men argued periodically about McAfee’s dogs.
