Knake receives STAR Scholarship

Syracuse Dunbar Avoca 2022 graduate Jenna Knake is the recipient of a $2,500 STAR Scholarship from the P.E.O Sisterhood. She was recommended by P.E.O. Chapter FV of Nebraska City, Nebraska. P.E.O. Chapter FV has been a part of the Nebraska City /Syracuse community since it was organized in 1956.
Established in 2009, the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is awarded to women in their final year of high school to attend an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the U.S. or Canada in the next academic year. Recipients exhibit excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for future success.
Knake was a leader during high school in FFA, FBLA, and National Honor Society. She was a member of 4-H and represented southeast Nebraska at the Nebraska Agriculture Youth Institute. Additionally, she was Nebraska Miss Teen Agriculture and also competes in rodeos. Knake is attending the University of Nebraska in Lincoln pursuing a degree in Agriculture, Education and Business with a goal to become an agriculture teacher and be an entrepreneur in an agriculture business.
According to one of the Co-Chairs of the STAR Scholarship, Becki Neemann, this is the first time a recipient has been in the Otoe County Area. Heidi Bernard serves as the other Co-Chair. Annually, the local chapter sells pecans for which a majority of the proceeds go toward scholarships. Started by seven women in Mount Pleasant, IA in 1869, P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) has helped over 119,000 women pursue educational goals by providing over $398 million in grants, scholarships, awards and loans. P.E.O. is a non-profit and one of the oldest women’s organizations in North America with about 5,800 chapters. The P.E.O Sisterhood also owns and supports Cottey College.
