Chuck Lemmond was driving through a Dripping Springs neighborhood when he noticed something: a home wheelchair ramp in need of remediation. For Lemmond, a custom home builder and founder of Hometown Missions, his first thought was to fix it.
This kind of selfless service was not new for Lemmond. A coordinator for community help projects for Dripping Springs United Methodist Church, he had answered many calls for assistance, one of which led to his founding of Hometown Missions. The faith-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization is dedicated to ensuring all residents in the greater Dripping Springs area live in safe, healthy housing with working facilities.
With this kind of experience under his belt, a wheelchair ramp was more than doable. So, Lemmond contacted the owner for a site visit.
Meanwhile, homeowner Sonya Massey and her sister Sylvia Sisbarro said they had both been praying for a solution to the unsafe ramp at the home. The existing ramp was far too steep for any reasonable wheelchair user to safely use, and Sonya had taken a few tumbles out of her motorized chair with the existing ramp. She was no longer able to leave her home without assistance traversing the ramp.
Hometown Missions quickly reached out to the Dripping Springs community, organizing a work day to remove the unsafe ramp and build a new ramp for Sonya. Volunteers answered the call on short notice and, this past Saturday, Oct. 1, constructed a larger and safer ramp.
Identifying a need for a safe wheelchair ramp on the back door of the home as well, Hometown Missions will be scheduling another work day soon to construct a second ramp.
Hometown Missions has served the Dripping Springs community for over twelve years. Since Hometown Missions began, over thirty projects have been completed in partnership with local churches, individuals and businesses in the community to improve living conditions for those in need.
