The National  Information Technology Development Agency  (NITDA) says it has  graduated more than 200 kids trained at the STEM Bootcamp for Kids (SB4KIDS) in Lagos State, recently .
The Director General,  NITDA, Mallam Kashifu Inuwa,  said the event was aimed at bridging the existing gap in the  educational sector.
Inuwa noted that the Stem Bootcamp for Kids triggered NITDA’s interest and resonated with the ongoing efforts towards implementing the National Digital economy policy for a digital Nigeria.
Represented  by the Manager,  South West Zonal Office of NITDA, Mrs Jumoke Alaka, he said the agency’s mandate was to create a framework for the planning, research, development, and standardization of application, coordination, monitoring, evaluation and regulation of Information Technology practices in Nigeria.
According to him, the agency   remains committed to supporting campaigns to diversify the country’s economy from a resource-based to a knowledge-based one through Information Technology (IT).
‘’We are indeed proud to be part of this event. It is my pleasure to introduce to you National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR).
“NCAIR is one of NITDA’s special purpose vehicles created to promote research and development on emerging technologies, and their practical application in areas of Nigeria’s national interest”, he said.
He noted that Kids across spectrums of the society were trained by NCAIR, a training organ of NITDA on Coding, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Drone.
The NITDA boss also hinted that kids were also trained  on Digital Communications, Embedded Systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), Virtual Reality, and 3D requisite skill-set for the 4th Industrial Revolution.
Inuwa further revealed  that as an NCAIR’s catch-them-young initiative, the SB4KIDS was a Bootcamp to inspire young Nigerians in STEM.
“Through the SB4Kids, NCAIR engaged youngsters between the ages of 8 and 16 years in an immersive and well-articulated bootcamp”, he said.
According  to him, the bootcamp was meant to coach and inspire youngsters to imbibe passion in STEM and create an early interest in digital and emerging technolgies, saying that the technologies would hopefully shape the children’s future careers in the field.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has partnered with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to tackle criminal activities bedeviling the telecommunication industry in the country.
NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr Reuben Muoka, made this known in a statement  in Abuja, Sunday.
Muoka, who said senior management staff of NSCDC in the South-West Zone had at an exclusive workshop organised by the Commission, hailed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) sealed between the two government agencies.
He said criminal activities such as telecom equipment vandalism and fraudulent registration of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards are going to be looked into.
According to him, topical issues discussed at the workshop covered the activities of NCC as presented by the relevant departments in the context of laws, other regulations and in relation to the roles of NSCDC.
He quoted  the Executive Vice-Chairman (EVC) of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, to have  said the Commission had over the years worked with relevant law enforcement agencies towards protecting telecoms sector from all kinds of criminality.
“Through despicable activities that are criminal and totally at variance with national security concerns of government, the deviant elements in our midst have been acting to undermine efforts put in place to consolidate the gains of the sector.
“These criminal activities include theft and vandalism of telecommunications infrastructure, the illegal use of fraudulently-registered SIM cards, operating without license, illegal call masking and so on,” he said.
Danbatta hinted that the workshop was organiised as part of efforts to constantly engage and update them on new trends and existing regulations.
This, he said, required concerted efforts for their implementation towards enhancing sanity in the telecoms sector.
He commended NSCDC and other agencies for carrying out raids and mopping up fraudulently-registered SIM cards found in circulation.
The EVC also lauded the agencies for raising the banner of awareness on the need to protect critical national telecoms infrastructure.
Danbatta, represented by the Director, Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement, NCC, Mr Ephraim Nwokonneya, said the gathering was to explore deployment of enabling laws, subsidiary legislations and extant guidelines to arrest criminality in the sector.

Nigerian scientists and experts have called on the government  to create an enabling environment for biotechnology to thrive in order to build, boost and sustain a national economy.
The experts made the call recently at a Biosafety and Biotechnology Sensitisation Workshop for North Central farmers and Agricultural Extension Agents in Abuja.
The Director General (DG) of National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Prof Abdullahi Mustapha, in his presentation, said a quarter of the world population expected to rise by 9.5 per cent in 2050 would be in Africa.
According to him, to aid in the building and boosting of a Nigeria’s national economy, the biotechnology and biosafety space must be encouraged to thrive.
Noting that present food production does not match the current population growth rate, Mustapha said Nigeria and Africa each year lose exponential amount in foreign exchange due to incessant food imports from developed countries.
“Transformation of agriculture in Africa requires a new approach focusing on Science, Technology and Innovations to increase productivity and generate surplus for trade and export”, he said.
The DG urged that Nigeria and Africa must wake up to the reality confronting the continent regarding food insufficiency and supply by investing in the biotechnology and biosafety space.
He stated that the challenges of  low food production, poor harvest, degraded soils, limited access to finance, dysfunctional markets, unconducive policies, climate change, among others, could be overcome.
Mustapha also said some of these challenges were self-inflicted and could be surmounted with zeal in the application of modern biotechnology and safe application of biosafety measures.

Ms Favour James, Founder, Betalife, who was happy said the seed fund would be channeled to marketing and creating awareness for solutions.
“We are going to utilise the money in engaging more professionals and in our marketing strategy, because blood donation is not a popular thing in Nigeria.
“We will also invest in building collaboration between hospitals and blood banks,”James said.
Mr Susumu Yuzurio,Chief Representative,JICA Nigeria, congratulated the startups, while acknowledging that all of them were winners in their respective manners.
Yuzurio encouraged them to sustain the knowledge they had acquired towards building a digital economy for the nation.
Mr Kashifu Inuwa,Director-General of NITDA,at the demonstration by the startups, said that the programme was targeted at refining business ideas of the innovators and developing the digital economy agenda.
“This partnership is in furtherance to the commitment of NITDA in sustaining the promotion and growth of digital innovation and entrepreneurship, promotion of indigenous content derived from of the seven pillars of our Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) 2021-2024.
“This is to increase the number of Innovation-Driven Enterprises (IDEs) viz- a- viz sustaining the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.
“The partnership with JICA in the implementation of the iHatch programme is part of our initiatives to strengthen the tech and innovation ecosystem.
“This is for the creation of more IDEs that will invariably contribute to creation of jobs for our teeming youth and the prosperity of our country,” Inuwa said.
He added that programme took the startups through a series of coaching, lectures, and boot-camps to generate scalable and adaptable business models in the country.
Onuwa recalled the selection process assessed the startups’ ideas based on the criteria of profitability, scalability, social impact, idea technique, competitive advantage, experience, and a clearly defined future roadmap.
The DG said that the agency and JICA would be extending the third cohort across the six geo-political zones of the country by the end of the second Cohort that would also span to five months.

“They will provide the much-needed jobs for our youths, while also nurturing their entrepreneurial spirit to catalyse the Nigerian digital economy to the next level.”
Mr Nao Fuwa, JICA expert, urged the startups to think of why they studied business and why they considered opening a business.
