The Rivers Government says it is collaborating with stakeholders to ensure proper crowd management and zero fatality as political rallies and Ember month activities begin.
The Director, Rivers State Emergency Medical Services, Dr Sylvanus Ujum, said this at its maiden sensitisation/road walk on Saturday in Port Harcourt.
The programme tagged, “Walk for Life, Walk for Safety”, was organised by the State government in collaboration with other emergency management and response agencies.
Ujum said that the sensitisation was organised to check incidences of road traffic crashes, building collapse and other avoidable fatalities associated with the boisterous and care-free attitude usually exhibited during the ember months and political rallies.
According to him, the move has become imperative following past experiences of cases of stampede during political campaigns, religious and other social gatherings.
He said that the state government had directed that all churches, political rallies and gatherings must adequately involve all emergency management and response agencies.
Also speaking, the South-South Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Godwin Tepikor, also advised residents of Rivers to apply moderation in all their engagements.
According to him, the last quarter of the year usually records increase in traffic, movements of goods and services within and across states with apparently high fatality rates.
“People tend to over labour themselves to achieve the year’s target in the ember months, that is why we are creating awareness on the need to apply moderation to curb the menace,” he said.
The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Salisu Galadunci advised on the need for proper adherence to traffic rules and regulations to check road accidents.
Galadunci also urged residents of the state to embrace voluntary blood donation to help boost blood availability in the state.
He was represented by the Deputy Corps Commander, Head of Operations of FRSC, Mr Chukwuma Mbaegbu.
In his remarks, Head Donor Recruitment, Arm Forces Blood Centre Port Harcourt, Mr Onyekachi Igwe, decried the poor response to voluntary blood donation by residents of the state.
According to him, the low response to blood donation is affecting the blood banks in the state as they are running out of supply.

The President of Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce Industry, Mines and Agriculture (PHCCIMA), Eze Mike Elechi, has expressed joy over the positive outcome of his all inclusive administration vision for the organisation.
Elechi said this during the induction of new members of PHCCIMA and the unveiling of the compendium of the activities of the Chamber since its incorporation into the Rivers State Investors’ Guilde in Port Harcourt recently.
According to him, his plan, for running an all inclusive administration was yielding positive results due to positive outcome of the monthly general forum of the Chamber.
Elechi, pointed out that the forum under his control, gave members opportunities to interface with one another, exchange business ideas and as well, make new friends while networking.
The PHCCIMA President who also is the Managing Director of Vintage Farms and Products, Elele posited that August in retrospect was loaded with so many activities including the well attended ‘Power-To-Power’ business summit that just ended in Port Harcourt.
He also used the medium to commend the Chairman of Power and Energy Trade Group of the Chamber, Engr. Tony Nwogbo and his committee for the success of that event.
The former Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, further revealed within last month, the Chamber acquired a new 30KVA Generating set to power its operations and enhance work efficiency.
“We also received a high powered delegation led by the Rwandan High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency, Amb. Stanislas Kamanzi where robust business ideas were discussed and the Chamber secured an opportunity to lead a delegation of 50 members on a trade mission to Rwanda”, he said.
Meanwhile, he has charged the new members to see their induction as not only an opportunity to widened the scope of their businesses, but also make contributions by attracting investors for the even development of Rivers State.
He added that the copy of the compendium which chronicled activities of the Chamber will serve as a guide to anyone doing business and intending business operators who may want to pitch their tents in Port Harcourt.
Speaking on the topic; ‘The Role of Non-oil Export in Economic Development In The South South Region”, the Regional Coordinator of Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) , Mr. Joe Itah called for diversification into the non-oil Export sector in order to save the country from imminent collapse.
Itah noted that Nigeria as a country is naturally blessed with abundant potentials apart from the crude oil and gas.
He however, expressed hope that talking with PHCCIMA which he described as the leader of the organize private sector in Rivers State remained the best opportunity for the required attention.
He explained that NEPC is constitutionally empowered with the responsibilities of coordinating, regulating and encouraging business owners to register their businesses and export their products so as to enable them earn the much needed foreign exchange.
The NEPC regional coordinator, also hinted that their organization has assisted some Small Scale business owners that were affected during the Covid-19 era to return to business.
Giving hint on the untapped business opportunities in Rivers State, the Governorship Candidate of the Social Democratic party(SDP), Senator Magnus Ngei Abe who was at the Chamber members forum at the instance of his Deputy, Chief Dr. Patricia Ogbonnaya, said that Rivers State has all it takes to replicate the Arri-Arria market in Aba, Abia State where millions of Rivers youths could have opportunities to either learn trade or get themselves gainfully employed.
Abe who expressed regrets that the dilapidated state of Ogoni axis of East West road has driven out a lot of companies out of the State and added that the state will continue to lead in business activities.
High point of the Chamber August members monthly general forum held on Wednesday 31st day of August, 2022 at the Chamber’s Secretariat Aba road in Port Harcourt was the unveiling and lunching of the PHCCIMA’s compendium.

The National Deputy President of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Dr. Muhammad Sirago Aliyu, has called on the newly elected pioneer Executives of the society in Rivers State to be dedicated in their service in line with societal standards.
Making the call recently through a virtual inauguration ceremony at the Rivers State University (RSU), the Deputy President urged the new Executive to discharge their duties professionally.
While congratulating them on their emergence as pioneer executives of the body in the State, he further urged them to uphold the tenets of Computer Scientists, noting that it’s their responsibility to lift the society to enviable heights in the country.
In his remark, the Vice Chancellor (VC) of RSU, Professor Nlerum Okogbule, promised to synergise with the society to achieve set goals, in other for the Chapter to be role model to other states in the country.
Professor Okogbule, who was represented by Dr. Daniel Matthias, the newly elected Vice Chairman of he Society, stressed the need for the society to open its doors for new members, noting that “it’s where they belong in this digital world”.
Earlier in his address, the newly elected State Chairman of the NCS, Dr. Emmanuel Legborsi, expressed gratitude to God for the privilege of being the pioneer Chairman.
He also thanked the State Government for the peaceful atmosphere in the State that had made it possible for the NCS to conduct a peaceful and hitch-free election.
Dr. Legborsi used the opportunity to assure members of an all-inclusive government, stressing that the pioneer executives would strive to fulfill all their campaign promises.
Such promises, he noted, include providing a befitting secretariat for the Society, embarking on membership drive, and waging a war against cybercrime.
While thanking members for the opportunity to serve them, he solicited for their support, noting that little can be achieved without their support.
“We have not promised you anything we can do alone as Chairman and Executives. Our greatest desire is to work with all of you in educational institutions, government ministries, departments and agencies, oil and gas companies, industries, telecommunication companies, media houses, organized private sectors and online business owners. We shall succeed as a team, and this includes you”, he said.
Other members of he new Executive are Osuigbo Ebenezar (Secretary), Benibo Amieyeofori (Publicity Secretary), and Engr. Innocent Ike Ewerenance (Ex-officio).

The Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Prof. Okechuku Onuchuku, has lauded the Tertiary Institutions Women Association (TIWA), Rivers State Chapter, for the role it plays in moulding students across tertiary institutions in the State.
Onuchuku, who lauded the women recently during a courtesy visit at the Council Chambers of the institution, affirmed that without the morals they teach, most students would have taken the wrong path.
He noted that the success story recorded in terms of academic performance and good behaviour on the path of the students could not have been possible without the moral support of women.
While acknowledging the benefits of the digital world to knowledge expansion and information dissemination, the Vice Chancellor expressed regrets that the internet, which should ordinarily be a source of joy to people, has become otherwise.
“The internet and knowledge explosion has become a source of serious concern as it is doing more harm to children exposed to it unhindered”, he stated.
He, therefore, advised mothers to constantly be on the watch and monitor the kind of information that their children are exposed to.
In her speech, the President General of TIWA, Rivers State Chapter, Barrister Uchenda Bibian Okogbule, noted that they had come to rub minds, synergise and generate ideas that would help them build the association.
She congratulated the Vice Chancellor on his appointment, adding that they were privileged to be hosted by the University.
Earlier, the President of university of Education Women Association (UEWA), Mrs Chika Onuchuku, informed the Vice Chancellor that the women had come to announce their presence on IAUE campus with the courtesy visit before proceeding to the TIWA quarterly meeting hosted by IAUE.
