Youth entrepreneurship plays a vital role for the economic growth by creating jobs. However, many young graduates still do not see setting up a new business as a first career option upon graduation, Deputy Director of Enterprise Office Dr Sharina binti Yunus of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) said.
“To help tackle this, UTB through the Enterprise Office and Shell LiveWIRE Brunei are committed to cultivate the entrepreneurial mindset among youth through workshops such as this.
“This joint workshop is the first step in catalysing the entrepreneurial and creative mindset among students.
“To create companies that are more innovative in the future, a change in mindset must occur,” she said during a four-day workshop entitled ‘Become a Successful Owner Manager (BSOM)’ at UTB recently.
Held from September 12 to 15, 75 students from higher education institutions in the Sultanate participated.
The workshop was organised by Shell LiveWIRE Brunei and supported by UTB as a strategic partner through the Enterprise Office, to encourage the participants to have a deeper understanding of the local entrepreneurship ecosystem and to equip them with tips and tricks to become a successful owner and manager. The participating universities included UTB, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), Politeknik Brunei and Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE).
The workshop was co-led by Dr Sharina and Shell LiveWIRE Brunei Business Network and Projects lead Aziemah binti Daud; and facilitated by Shell LiveWIRE Brunei Lead Business Counsellor Afiq Mohammed.
BSOM was an initiative by Shell LiveWIRE Brunei to support the country’s continuous effort to diversify economically and encourage active participation to rapidly increase the development of small-and-medium-enterprises locally.
The programme was designed to encourage participants to turn their business ideas into reality, as well as gain an understanding of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and business operations such as marketing, management and financial control.
