An unusual home that looks like a spaceship is ready for a new owner to board. The dome home in Somonauk, IL, is available for $599,000.
The owner “bought the land in 2000 and it took three years to construct the house,” explains Mark Altamore, who is co-listing the property along with Ro Malik. Both are with Keller Williams ONEChicago.
“He always wanted a dome home, so he bought the land and constructed it,” says Altamore.

The curved structure is covered in cedar shake shingles with a copper cap. It offers a whopping 4,018 square feet of living space.

“You’ll never find another home like it. I just love the knotty pine that runs through it,” Altamore says. “If I had $600,000, I’d buy it.”

The main floor hosts most of the living spaces, including a large kitchen and two bedrooms with bathrooms. The other bedrooms, including the primary suite, are in the large loft.
A multipiece column runs through the center of the house, providing both support and architectural interest. The ceilings are all knotty pine, and the floors are oak.
“I love the beams. The woodwork is just amazing,” Altamore says.

At one time, the home was able to rotate on its 12-foot foundation using two motors, Altamore says. The son who inherited the property from his builder father has never tried rotating it.
There’s also a climate-controlled metal building mainly used for storage. The sale includes 5 acres, and Altamore says the buyer could put horses on the land. The location is about an hour outside of Chicago.
