Even as the Cowboys explore the possibility of signing veteran tackle Jason Peters, they plan to roll with rookie Tyler Smith at left tackle, due to the knee injury recently suffered by veteran mainstay Tyron Smith. Appearing on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, owner/G.M. Jerry Jones addressed the realities of plugging in a first-rounder who previously had been working at guard.
After saying earlier in the week that it’s “safe to say” Tyler Smith will get the job, Jones recognized that it won’t be easy, for the rookie or for the team.
“Well, I think Tyler is going to get his man,” Jones said. “What’s that mean? He’s going to get his man, and I think he’s going to do a good job of it. Is he not going to get him all the time? Yes. We need to have somebody there to help him out, we need to keep some out, to cut some out of the offense, you need to cut it out a little bit and help him out. But I think he’ll get his man, I think he will get better. I think that’s the nature of the position and football.
“He’s got everything we hoped and more when we drafted him. That’s exactly what we drafted him for, to come in and be the left tackle. So he had a really outstanding camp, all of the things are there. Do I wish we had Tyron? Yes. Will we get Tyron back? Likely. But in the meantime he’s going to come in and he’s going to get a Harvard doctorate degree at playing left tackle between now and then. Will we pay some price for it? Yes. Can we win with him paying a price? I think so, yes.”
There’s only one way to find out. In nine days, it’s Tampa at Dallas on Sunday Night Football to get the season started. Tyler Smith will either get his man enough times to let Dak Prescott run the offense, or he won’t.
Jerryspeak- “Well, I think Tyler is going to get his man…”
Translation: If you think Tyler got flagged for holding alot in college, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
Wait, so the old left tackle and the new left tackle are both named Ty Smith? That must cause some confusion around the building.
Cowboys fans have been “paying some price” having Jerruh as the owner…
McCarthy let Rodgers get his brains beat in early on.
I feel for you, Dak.
Rookies don’t pass block as much in college as they do in the NFL, and when they do, it’s usually not in the same style; thus there’s usually a bit of a learning curve.
Given that left tackle is the most important position on the line from a pass blocking standpoint, Mr. Jones better hope ‘some price’ isn’t Dak Prescott leaving the field on a stretcher.
“HOLDING – Number 73 – Offense – 10 Yard Penalty” Get used to hearing that all year Cowboy fans lol
Yo yo yo Jerrah…. I know you got the money and you can do what you want but look in the mirror you’re no general manager
Just shut up Jerry.
Jerruh’s never met a sentence he couldn’t strangle, a thought he couldn’t muddle.
The only one who is going to pay is Prescott, for Jones stupidity. Then again Cowboy fans have been paying for years for that one
Coach/dr./g.m. jones is whistling past the graveyard, to put it in a way he can understand.
as a confidence builder for young smith, he is interviewing jason peters this afternoon. hopefully j.p. bleeds that cap money dr. jones was saving for parsons, who they were forced to draft as the best defensive player left after horn and surtain went right before they were to pick at #10. That worked out better than this year, when they reached for young mr. smith.
I hate to say this, but I can already see it coming. We are going through another mediocre season because again, this time because of the lack of a good offensive line. We may have the #1 defense in the East with this group, but with no pass blocking and bone head play calling, the only thing we can hope for is a wild card berth and we get a new owner. Jones is an idiot.
Jerry wanted the 17 game season because he was sick of going 8-8. Now the Boys can go 9-8 every year and Jerry can call himself a winner in that trash division.
Dak’s going to pay the price. They’ll have to roll him to the right a lot. Tyler could not beat out McGovern for the easier position (RG). However, time will tell. In the long run he turn out to be good.
Kellen Moore needs to scheme his way out of this mess. Dak will need to get the ball out sooner and the Cowboys will need to run the ball more. Otherwise it will be a free for all.
It’s nice that Jerry and McCarthy acknowledged that the line needed work after the playoff loss, but the line is actually worse now than starting out last season. It really speaks to the incompetence of the GM that he recognizes a weakness and has failed to fix it.
The Cowboys will keep their tight end next to Smith to help him out. But at the same time will lose a receiver to go down field.
Sounds like they just drafted Phil Pozderac’s brother, Cowboys fans.
Philly is going to take this division if the Cowboys don’t get it together. They should be calling NE about Isaiah Wynn. Wynn has some injury issues in the past, but he’s been good enough to be Tom Brady’s left tackle his first two years in the league. For some reason he has not been motivated in NE, and it’s led to a devaluation of what he can do. He hasn’t been a problem, but clearly he would like to play elsewhere. NE needs him, but if they think this is year 2 of a 3 year rebuilding plan, maybe they become willing to part with him. If he signs elsewhere in free agency they likely get a 3rd round pick at the end of the 3rd round, and they got a year more of service from him. Or, they trade him for something better than that. It would not surprise me if NE was willing to simply take what would be a slightly higher 3rd round pick from Dallas vs the Compensatory Pick. He has a salary of 10 mil this year, but that is not expensive for an experienced Left Tackle. Git’r done Jerruh!

Two seasons? What? His first year he got hurt in the preseason and didn’t play a single regular season/playoff game. The Patriots won the SB without him. The second season he played in all of 8 games, once again due to injury. In the past? He missed games last season and missed a week of training camp due to an “ailment.” He wasn’t even at the Pats practice yesterday. Yup. Injuries in the past…
Nice vote of confidence Mr. G.M. You never know, he may surprise you and ball out, but it’s nice for him to know that you have little confidence in him. That’s some solid leadership.
Jerry Jones isn’t an idiot. He’s senile. There’s a big difference.
When Tyron Smith is your starting left tackle and he gets hurt, you’ll be paying some price with whoever you put in there to replace him. Just like New England paid some price when Brady left and New Orleans paid up when Brees left. When a HOFer goes down, teams pay some price. Every once in a while, you get a surprise when the replacement is better than the starter.
The sentence should read: Cowboys are fixin’ to pay a price.
Eagles were already the superior team, but this injury now gives Dallas a built-in excuse. But Philly has a top 5 team – just depends on if Hurts can take that next step.
I’ve often read there are two certainties in life, death and taxes.
Sadly, there are at least three if you add on, Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones will never fire Cowboys’ GM Jerry Jones.
“Eagles were already the superior team…” what version of reality is that in? Last season was 41-21 and 51-26 both is Dallas’s favor. Did Philly win the free agency Super Bowl again?

As Christopher Allan pointed out Wynn has been extremely injury prone since his Pats’ rookie year. .
I remember when NE drafted him 23rd and Sony Michel 31st in 2018. I read everything I could find on both players. And despite being heathy in HS and college I remember reading something that
suggested Isaiah might encounter a lot of injuries in the pros. And Sony Michel had already been injured several times in HS and College. Personally speaking, I think Dallas should stay clear clear of Wynn. I would love to be a fly on the wall and hear what is said when teams discuss acquiring players who have concerns attached to their names.
