At Wednesday’s press conference for the Elm City Bioscience Center.
City officials and bioscience-business boosters cut the ribbon for a newly opened lab and research building located in converted former offices downtown.
That was the scene Wednesday at 55 Church St., an eight-story building now dubbed the Elm City Bioscience Center.
According to a press release sent out on Friday by the property’s owner, The Hurley Group, the building is a mix of lab and office suites for “life science companies operating at BSL‑1 and BSL‑2.” The 113,600 square foot building “offers lab suites for half-floor (6,300 SF), full-floor (12,600 SF) and multiple floors.”
The press release about Wednesday’s ribbon cutting also states that the building already has three commercial tenants — Modifi Biosciences, Siduma Therapeutics, and Alphina Therapeutics.

New Haven, CT – September 14, 2022 – New Haven’s newest life sciences building, Elm City Bioscience Center, was officially unveiled in a ribbon cutting ceremony and celebration on Wednesday, September 14th. The Hurley Group, owner, developer, and manager; along with building tenants, Modifi Biosciences, Siduma Therapeutics, and Alphina Therapeutics, welcomed over 100 guests including State and City officials, business and community leaders, friends, and family members to the state-of-the-art lab building in the heart of Yale’s university and medical complex.
David Goldblum, President & CEO of The Hurley Group, welcomed guests and provided highlights of the project. New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker joined CT DECD Commissioner David Lehman, Yale Ventures Director Josh Geballe, and Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Garrett Sheehan in offering congratulations and acknowledging the significance of the bioscience industry in New Haven. Leaders from Modifi Biosciences, Siduma Therapeutics and Alphina Therapeutics, the building’s first bioscience tenants, shared how thrilled they are with their new lab spaces and to be part of the dynamic New Haven bioscience community. The crowd was delighted by a performance of “Amazing Grace” by New Haven Chorale and guests enjoyed tours and refreshments.
“New Haven is a hub for bioscience and biotechnology research and innovation, which is simultaneously improving health outcomes for patients with groundbreaking medical care and improving economic outcomes for residents with good-paying jobs. The Elm City Bioscience Center and its tenants — Modifi Biosciences, Siduma Therapeutics, and Alphina Therapeutics — exemplify this by applying their cutting-edge research and discoveries to fighting cancer and other diseases, which claim the lives of far too many of our loved ones,” said Mayor Justin Elicker. “I want to thank David Goldblum, The Hurley Group and the Elm City Bioscience Center for choosing New Haven for this important, life-saving work that promises to transform the lives of our residents and our city.”
Located at 55 Church Street, Elm City Bioscience Center is the latest commercial building in New Haven to convert to life science lab facilities. The Hurley Group, which acts as builder and property manager from its headquarters offices within the building, aims to make it a community for fast-growing companies graduating out of the area’s incubators and other smaller spaces. The building welcomes tenants and visitors with a beautiful, naturally lit lobby featuring seating areas and a peaceful rear courtyard with seating. All the great amenities that Downtown New Haven has to offer — restaurants, shops, cultural attractions, fitness and outdoor activities plus numerous options for housing and lodging — are just steps away.
“By providing state-of-the-art laboratories in the heart of downtown for early and middle stage biotech companies, Elm City Bioscience Center aims to fill an important role in New Haven’s emerging biotech ecosystem,” said Hurley Group President David Goldblum.
