The education sector and the tertiary institutions in Nigeria have experienced in recent times, persistent closure due to the industrial actions by the academic staff union and non academic staff.
The consequence of these recounted closure of schools and academic programs on student’s learning effectiveness can be adequately imagined than described.
Tertiary education in Nigeria has thus undergone enormous obstacles as a result of industrial actions by both the academic staff and non academic staff this has always subjected the students to miserable conditions, disputing academic programs, giving students undeserved extension In their study years, poor students concentration on academic programs, giving students unnecessary extension in their study years, poor student concentration on academic activities and poor lecturer – student relationship amongst others. Consequently, many students unable to Savage their lives and their times, have turned to various alternative activities in other not to be rendered totally useless with the passing Time.
The incessant strike actions that have caused continuous closure of schools has birthed a number of social levels that are not so visible and do not really look or sound harmful unless a significant action is applied.
Till this period ASUU strike has been the Big wicked lion eating our dear sheep, Without any positive reaction from the shepherd. Negatively, It has caused a lot of hardship to the lives of our Youths/Students especially who has a very slow academic journey , He /She might likelyl end up graduating above 30yrs which is above the requirement for NYSC such students won’t be privilege to serve and might be denied when applying for jobs, Students who has no skills might use this opportunity on learning something lucrative for the purpose of future and Idleness , If One have already One can Utilize and make use of it amidst strike Unless one is less privilege to do so , or for some other personal justifications.
ASUU strike forces students to acquire skills, start businesses
Mutiu Adam, 24years old student, who was born in Kwara state and grew up their said his joy knew no limits when he was finally offered entry into the university of Ilorin to study plant biology.
But that joy soon turned to frustration when the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared a strike, just after his first semester examinations. Adam however, said he did not allow himself to stay sad, and is now running a profitable barbing salon that is already engaging people and hopes to expand.
He said: “I have always known how to barb hair, but I did not have enough money to open a saloon. So I did menial jobs to raise some money for school because I have always wanted to be a graduate. I was so furious when ASUU declared the first strike. I thought that would be all, only for them to broaden it.
“I angrily took the money I have saved for school and invested in the haircut business, hoping to make more money and I’m so glad I made that choice because business has been good. I employed two staff, a trainee and an assistant. With the way things are going, I’ll make all the money I need for school and I will expand my business to run sustainably, even when I return to school.”
The current government of Kwara state-supported and get back for entrepreneurs hereby engaging youth in many entrepreneurs chances, in recent days on international youth day the the current governor of kwara state, empower 100 youth with 1million naira each, wow!! Its money for those at student stage.
Abdullah, a student of University of Ilorin lamented that the period is boring as there are no jobs. “I am always indoors taking care of my siblings, but deep down, I want to learn a skill, tailoring to be precise, or get a job to keep myself busy until it is called off. I feel so useless doing nothing, it is really frustrating.” but she added that she also wishes to use her spare time to engage in buying and selling male and female T-shirts to save something for herself until the strike is called off,” she said.
ASUU kept Rolling over the strike action has they left students with no positive hope.
