SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The state of Texas trails only California in added credit card debt in 2022.
This follows a record-setting reduction in credit card debt among U.S. consumers in 2020.
A WalletHub study shows Texas added $5.8 billion in credit card debt in the second quarter of this year, which fits a nationwide pattern of adding more credit card debt than the amount of money spent on paying it down.
To start off 2022, consumers around the country paid down $12.5 billion in Q1, but then added a record $67.1 billion in new debt in Q2.
After California and Texas at the top, Florida, New York and Illinois rounded out the top five in added credit card debt.
The bottom five states, from highest to lowest, were Alaska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, and Vermont.
