Brasfield & Gorrie tops out on Huntsville sciences building
Birmingham-headquartered Brasfield & Gorrie recently topped out the HudsonAlpha Discovery Life Sciences building in Huntsville. Topping out marks a structure reaching its full height. Construction on the lab and office building is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2023.
The building will house Discovery Life Sciences, which conducts life science research and is currently located in a smaller space on the campus of HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology.
According to Discovery CEO Glenn Bilawsky, the new headquarters will allow the company to consolidate all of its laboratories and operations into one building.
This is Brasfield & Gorrie’s third project with HudsonAlpha. The company’s work in North Alabama spans a variety of market sectors, including commercial, aerospace, government, healthcare, industrial, and mission critical. The company has completed more than $668 million projects accounting for 3.8 million square feet in the science and technology construction sector.
Growth Capital Partners to develop 442,896 square feet of industrial product in Carolinas
Growth Capital Partners (GCP), a Birmingham-based private real estate investment company, is partnering with Houston, Texas-based developer Phelan-Bennett Development (PB) an affiliate of Phelan Development Company, LLC under a forward-progress agreement to develop two speculative industrial projects in Gastonia, North Carolina, and an additional speculative in Fort Mill, South Carolina, for GCP’s Fund II.
GCP acquired a 17.3-acre site in Gastonia’s Northwest Gateway Logistics Park in April and PB will break ground in late September for a 132,395-square-foot and a 166,370-square-foot industrial warehouse with expected completion in Q3 2023.
The 15.47-acre site GCP acquired mid-August in Fort Mill at Lakemont Business Center will break ground on a 144,131-square-foot project in December with expected completion in Q4 2023.
The six total forward-progress projects GCP is currently working on will deliver nine buildings for a combined 1,688,511 square feet of industrial space for GCP’s Fund II over the next year.
150,000-square-foot patient tower opens in south Texas
Local construction firm Robins & Morton and South Texas Health System Edinburg opened a new, five-story patient tower hospital addition in Edinburg, Texas, on Sept.15.
The firm served as the general contractor for the 150,000-square-foot addition, which more than doubles the size of the hospital, includes an emergency department, advanced imaging center, intensive care unit (ICU), inpatient rehabilitation unit and adult inpatient nursing unit. The updated emergency department contains 14 exam rooms, two trauma rooms and four triage rooms. The remainder of the patient tower addition consists of 16 suites, 28 inpatient rehabilitation suites, 15 medical/surgical suites and shell space for future expansion.
The project also includes a 20,000-square-foot renovation within the existing facility, including the addition of a catheterization lab and updates to the pharmacy and other laboratory spaces, that will be complete in early 2023.

Broad Metro to break ground on Hoover’s first entertainment district
The commercial real estate firm behind Stadium Trace Village will break ground this week in Hoover’s first official entertainment district.
According to Broad Metro’s website, Village Green is a family-oriented arts and entertainment lifestyle venue designed as a community-centric space with the ability to hold larger ticketed events periodically. It will feature an 40-ft by 32-ft covered amphitheater stage including 800-square-feet of stage support space with a large green room for entertainers, a large multi-purpose pavilion, a 900-square-foot multi-use bar with a 500-square-foot covered seating area , an outdoor recreation area, and a spacious green lawn. Between the bar and stage is a 1,400-square-foot secure play area for children to enjoy, which includes play mounds, a crawling tunnel, a slide, musical themed playscapes, and an interactive art wall.
The event will be held on Friday, Sept. 23 at 9 a.m. at 5249 Peridot Place behind Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux.
