Designed by legendary custom builder and Zero Engineering founder Shinja Kimura, the XSR700 is a retro-inspired standard that takes influence from vintage Tuning Fork Company models like the XS650. Based on Yamaha’s MT-07 platform, the XSR700 was specifically engineered to be extremely modular in a bid to lend itself to customization. As a result, the XSR7 has become a go-to donor for some of today’s biggest custom builders including Deus Ex Machina, which has now returned to the platform for yet another one-off work.
Dubbed “The Forager,” this XSR was built by the shop’s lead wrench Jeremy Tagand at Deus’ House of Simple Pleasures flagship location in Sydney. The bike’s owner originally purchased the donor with the intent of doing some minor custom work, though a paint job and some new lighting equipment quickly snowballed into a markedly more involved one-off project. The front end of the Yamaha now features a new 7” LED headlight, an SW-Motech alloy front fender, and fork gaiters from JVB Moto, while the cockpit has been fitted with top-shelf switchgear from Purpose Built Moto, a Motogadget speedometer, and Biltwell moto bars wrapped in Motogadget grips and fitted with Motogadget mirrors.
Riding on a spoked set of Alpina Raggi wheels shod in Pirelli MT60RS tires The Forager has also been gifted an Evotech tail tidy, an aftermarket radiator guard, Kellerman micro-LED indicators fore and aft, and a stainless steel SC-Project Conic 70’s exhaust system. The stock seat on the bike has also been swapped out for a single-passenger saddle from the Yamaha parts catalog that’s been reupholstered in ribbed leather. The build’s finishing touch came in the form of a custom green and gold livery that takes inspiration from vintage race cars — more specifically the green from Jack Brabham’s 1967 BT19 F1 racer and the gold hue from the Arrows A2 F1 car.
While The Forager is already spoken for, Deus Ex Machina is selling several of the components used on the build, including its exhaust system, switchgear, radiator guard, and a plethora of other bits.
